ARTISTS OF "STRONTIUM-90" IN CHERNOBYL

On December, 1, 2005, artists of "Strontium-90" visited Chernobyl nuclear power plant. On the site of the plant the artists honored the memory of fallen Chernobyl heroes at the victims' memorial. The action was conducted on the eve of President Viktor Yushchenko's visit to Chernobyl.

In a meeting with the NPP management, the artists said they are beginning an art project under the name of "Chernobyl. Between the Past and the Future". The project is devoted to the 20-anniversary of Chernobyl accident and targeted at attracting attention to the problems of Chernobyl, including shutdown Chernobyl units and 'sarcophagus' facility. The artists are convinced that Chernobyl is not especially Ukrainian tragedy. Chernobyl accident is a global scale disaster, and its overcoming is still in need of common efforts of all mankind.

Politicians and experts have long said it is unacceptable to leave the shelter problems for future generations to deal with. The 20th anniversary of Chernobyl is a reminder that a new generation has already grown up since the accident. What kind intellectual and technical heritage has received new generation? What is Chernobyl for them? Nothing more than a horror story told by older people? The artists say it is not allowed the problems to be forgotten by society with the change of generations.

In early December, a group of Ukrainian artists known as Strontium-90, established in 1990, visited the Chernobyl site. Valery Goleiko, leader of the group, told Nucleonics Week that the 20th anniversary of Chernobyl is a reminder that a new generation has already grown up since the accident. But, he said, for the new generation, Chernobyl is nothing more than a scary tale told by older people--or even a computer game.

In a meeting with ChNPP management, the artists said they and American counterparts are beginning an art project targeted at attracting attention to the problems of Chernobyl. They said they would not allow the problems to be forgotten by society with the change of generations.

У день 19-ї річниці зведення об'єкта "Укриття" на законсервованому четвертому енергоблоці ЧАЕС соціально-екологічна група незалежних художників "Стронцій -90" провела на Чорнобильській АЕС акцію "Світло пам'яті". Художники та журналісти українських ЗМІ запалили 19 свічок і поклали букети з квітів і репродукцій своїх картин біля меморіалу станції - віддали данину пам'яті загиблим чорнобильцям. Так розпочався міжнародний проект групи "Стронцій-90" - "Чорнобиль між минулим і майбутнім: укриття", приурочений 20-річчю Чорнобильської катастрофи.

… У своєму маніфесті художники "Стронцію-90" закликають: людино, навчись бачити не тільки очима і розумом, а й чистим серцем! Це дуже актуально у світі, в якому ми живемо після Чорнобиля. Чорнобиль спонукає нас змінити свідомість, бо буття сучасної людини часто перетворюється насаморуйнування.

… социально-экологическая группа художников "Стронций-90" провела на Чернобыльской АЭС первую акцию международного проекта "Чернобыль между прошлым и будущим: Укрытие". Акция приурочена к судьбоносной для Украины, да и всего мира, дате - ровно 19 лет назад над разрушенным четвертым блоком ЧАЭС был возведен объект "Укрытие".

Художники-тральфреалисты... заявили, что с помощью своего искусства хотят напомнить миру: "Укрытию" нужна помощь.
